Why are Mice a nuisance?

House Mice commonly cause economic damage to your homes and business.  They eat various foods contaminating these products with their urine, droppings and hair. Mice are known to gnaw through electrical wire, insulation, books, paintings and more. Damages that can cost a fortune to repair or replace. Mice can be quit a nuisance to farmers, feeding on newly planted grain and causing damage to the crops before harvest.

Diseases Mice Can Carry:

Lyme Disease:  Is a bacterial infection that is spread by a tick.

Symptoms- Itching, chills, headaches, fever, muscle pain and a stiff neck. 

Salmonellosis: is a bacterial infection in the lining of the small intestine. Caused by eating contaminated foods typically coming from animal feces.

Symptoms – sudden headaches, fever, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.

Leptospirosis: is a serious infection when coming in contact with Leptospira. If humans are infected can cause kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure, respiratory distress, death if left untreated.

Symptoms – Fever, Jaundice, pain in stomach, joints or muscles; Nausea. Can be fatal

Typhus: Is a bacterial disease spread by fleas or lice.

Symptoms – Backache, headaches, abdominal pain, dry cough, muscle pain and nausea. Another symptom would be a red rash that starts in the middle of the body and then will spread.

Rat Bite Fever:      Is a rare bacterial disease found in mice found in there mouths.

Symptoms- Chills, fever, joint pain,rash(red or purple) or swollen lymph node near the wound.

Ringworm: Is a skin infection due to a fungus.

Symptoms – itchy, red, raised, scaly patches that could blister and ooze.

Rickettsial pox:  Is a bacterial disease that originally is found in mice and then transferred through mites. Humans can get infected by mite bite but not from the mouse itself.

Symptoms – Bump at the bite mark, which will eventually turns into a black, crusty scab.  Flu-like symptoms that include, fever, chills, weakness and achy muscles.  The most distinctive symptom is a rash that breaks out.

Signs of mice:

Mice droppings may be found along runways, feeding areas or near shelter. Droppings are about 1/4 of an inch in length. In dusty areas of your home or mud, you may find there footprints or tail marks. Mice leave rub marks on beams, pipes,walls and other building structures. Bite marks can be seen on doors, ledges, walls and other stored products. You may find accumulations of wood shavings, insulation and other material which would be a good sign of mice being present. Mice are often heard moving around in walls, cabinets and will make squeaking noises.  They can leave a musky odor in your home or business.
