Opossums (didelphis virginiana) are opportunistic. They are omnivores. This mammal’s diet consists of mostly meat, insects, carrion, vegetables. fruits, grains, they also eat from compost piles, garbage cans and pet food. The Opossum is North America’s only marsupial and it’s mouth contains 50 teeth, more than any other mammal found in North America. They can run up to 7 mph and hang by their tails. Opossums are nocturnal. On average they weigh 6-7 lbs. but can weigh up to 14 lbs and have a maximum length of 40 inches.

Signs of Opossums:

Opossums are know to maul chickens starting at the rear. There tracks look similar to a tiny human hand print spread far apart. There scat are semi-liquid and when scared they may leave smelly, greenish fluid. You might hear scratching or thumping noise coming from your attics. Opossums are known to gnaw on plumbing, air ducts and electrical.
