Why are Skunks A Nuisance?

Skunks are omnivores. Skunks generally roam at night, eating plants, insects, worms, eggs and rodents. Skunks are fond of the honeybees and will attack there beehive. Skunks are diggers with there short legs and well developed claws. Skunks have poor eye sight but excellent sense of smell and hearing.  The Oily musk that skunks spray when they feel threatened is developed in there anal gland under there tale. Skunks will stamp there feet, raise there tale and back when threatened. *** If you come across this behavior you would be wise to quietly retreat. Skunks can spray that fowl smell up to 10 feet. Skunks are pest, there known to dig under buildings and structures. Skunks love to go through your garbage.

Signs of Skunks

The most common sign that a skunk is nearby is the musky odor they spray.  If you notice the smell on numerous occasions more than likely they have settled down in your area.  Skunks eat an insect called Larvae and will burrow in yards to find them. Skunks eat fruit, berries and other plants and are known to damage gardens. Skunk droppings are 2-4 inches long and about half inch around and will have insect skeletons,fruit seeds and animal hair.

 

Skunk (Mephitis Mephitis): Skunks are opportunistic.  They are omnivores.  This mammal’s diet consists of primarily insects, including bees and wasps, as well as mice, moles, fish, snakes, amphibians, crayfish, birds, eggs, poultry, garbage, pet food, and carrion (dead animals).  Skunks become a nuisance when they raid vegetable gardens, chicken houses and turkey barns, and dig under foundations. Skunks are nocturnal. On average they weigh 6-12 lbs. and are 20-30 inches long.
